Swarm is a GNU Publicly Licensed Library, originally developed at the Santa Fe Institute under the supervision of the Swarm Project at SFI. It is the primary modeling tool used by the Swarm Corporation and, as such, we intend to be long term supporters of the project. The solutions that SwarmCorp develops using the Swarm package are more robust and better understood because we are working in the context of a well established academic and public community. To get involved in this community, simply join one of the Swarm mailing lists. Info on these mailing lists is available here.
Source and binary distributions of Swarm are available for download, as are sample Swarm applications. In addition, the Swarm release documentation is available online.
ALife Web pages at SFI -- Swarm and the SwarmCorp approach to modeling complex systems is inspired by ALife. CIFSS at Humboldt State University -- The guys at HSU and cooperating institutions have a head start in using agent based modeling for resource managment. Check 'em out.
ALife Lab at Dublin City University -- Dr. Barry McMullin has started an ALife lab at DCU to study computational autopoiesis, virtual chemistries, genetic architectures and more. Though autopoiesis and computational studies of CAS have their origins in different philosophical camps (cybernetics vs. formal systems mathematics), they are not phenomenologically separate. And Dr. McMullin's group gives evidence to that.
Interactive Institute: Umeå Node -- Torbjörn Johansson is putting together a node of the Interactive Institute that specializes in developing new media for creative and technical design.
SEIN -- Simulating Self-organizing Innovation Networks studies the mechanisms, life-cycles and adaptive capacities of networks of institutions and individuals in the hopes of learning how to maintain and initiate such networks.
